2018 BMW 5 Series Touring

Not one to be outshone, BMW has released its 5 Series Touring
before the Geneva Auto show next month. This comes after
Mercedes released its E-Class Wagon. Unfortunately, the 2018
BMW 5 Series Touring will not be available in the U.S. However,
the U.S. market will get the sleeker 5-Series Gran Turismo
later this year. Read along for more information:

Except for the rear, the wagon shares its exterior styling with
the 5 Series sedan. It features the same kidney grille flanked
by similar adaptive LED lights. Its radiator grille features
new active slats that open up to channel more cooling air to
the engine and shuts to optimize the model’s aerodynamics. Its
bumper has been slightly revised and features new intakes with
new air vents that  optimize air flow to help reduce lift
as well as increase dynamics, particularly during high speeds.

The model also features a pronounced beltline. It also features
a hockey stick-shaped character line above its side skirts. At
the rear, the wagon has adopted the 5 Series sedan taillights
as well as the exhaust tips design. The model however gets a
tailgate that has a small spoiler at the top and a sloping rear
design that distinguishes it from the sedan. The rear window

Like the outgoing model, the wagon interior is based on that of
the 5 Series sedan. The current sedan received plenty of
changes, which are also featured in the wagon. To start with,
the model will feature a sculpted, detailed cockpit in place of
the current flat cockpit. The dash on the other hand is more
driver-centric. The wagon also gets a new steering where
wrapped in leather with French contrast stitching. The steering
wheel also features numerous buttons. BMW designers have also
shifted the infotainment system from the previous built-in
position to an iPad like look and mounted it on top of the
dashboard. The shifter is wrapped in leather and next to it is
a bigger iDrive controller.

The driver and front passenger get 16-way power adjustable
seats. There is an option for 20-way power adjusted seats with
massage and ventilation functions. Adding the M Sport package
gets one an M Sport leather wrapped steering wheel, aluminum
footrest and pedal covers as well as a SensaTec upholstered
dash. Rear passengers on the other hand get 1.2 inches of extra
legroom. The model also feature new storage compartments on the
center console and in the door pockets. The wagon offers 570
liters of cargo space that expands to 1,700 liters upon folding
the rear seats that have a 40/20/40 split folding

Tech-wise, the wagon comes with a 10.25-inch screen mounted on
the dash. It integrates a navigation system, Smartphone
operations and the entertainment system. The automaker also
offers  wireless charging, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay,
Wi-Fi hotspot, Advanced Real-Time Traffic among other
features  as standard.

For safety, the model offers a number of autonomous features
such as Lane keep assist, lane change assist, cross traffic
warning and active cruise control with a Stop&Go function.

Engine Specs and performance

The 2018 BMW 5 Series Touring will get the same lineup of
engines as it sedan sister. Therefore, the wagon is powered by
a turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 3.0
L, 6-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder mill produces 248 hp and
258 lb-ft of torque while the 6-cylinder engine is rated at 335
hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

The automaker says that the base 530i model that is powered by
the 2.0 L, 4-cylinder mill needs 6 seconds to accelerate from
0-60 mph, adding the xDrive makes the car two tenths faster.
The 540i which uses the 3.0 L,-6-cylinder mill on the other
hand takes 4.9 seconds in RWD and 4.7 seconds with xDrive.
The top speed is limited at 130 mph for both models but there
is an option to hike it to 155 mph.

There will also be two diesel engines. The base diesel mill is
a 2.0 L,4-cylinder engine that produces 190 hp. The more
powerful diesel mill is a turbocharged 3.0 L, 6-cylinder engine
rated at 261 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. It takes 6.1 seconds
to accelerate from 0-60 mph. The model will also feature a
plug-in hybrid with an electric range of 27 miles.

The engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission or
a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Price and release date

BMW is yet to release official prices of the 2018 BMW 5 Series
Touring. Given the array of new state-of-the-art technology and
design upgrades, I expect the model’s price to increase
slightly. Currently, the base 430i has a starting price of
$47,430; expect the new model to fetch around $49,000.


Top rivals of the 2018 BMW 5 Series Touring will be the
V90 and as you would expect, Mercedes is in the mix with
their Benz E-Class Wagon.
